The Town Council consists of seven members including the Mayor. Members are elected for two year terms. The Mayor is an elected position, the Mayor Pro Tem is selected by the Council at the first regular meeting following each annual election. The Council's regular meeting is the second Wednesday of the month at 5:30 pm. The Council holds a workshop on the 3rd Wednesday of every odd month at 6:00 pm.

Current members of the Ridgway Town Council are Mayor Pat Willits, Mayor Pro Tem John Clark, and Councilors Eric Johnson, Paul Hebert, Ellen Hunter, Debra Hynes and Rick Weaver.

Pat Willits was first elected Mayor in April 2000. He has served multiple terms as Mayor. Prior to being elected Mayor, he served on the Ridgway Planning Commission (1998-2000).

Pat is Executive Director of The Trust for Land Restoration (TLR), a non-profit land trust that helps western communities clean up and restore abandoned mining sites. Prior to joining TLR, Pat was Southwest Colorado Program Manager for the Nature Conservancy (1990-1998). Prior to that, Pat worked as Director of Nordic Skiing at Eldora Mountain Resort in Nederland, Colorado (1985-1991); as a river and back country mountain-biking guide for Nichols Expeditions/Poison Spider Bikes in Moab, Utah (1981-1989); as Nederland Community/Schools Coordinator for the Boulder Valley School District (1981-1985); and as a self-employed carpenter.

John Clark is a native Coloradan, and has lived in Ridgway since 1982. Like many people who have lived in Ridgway for any length of time, John does several things for a living. His primary professions are glass artist and Macintosh computer consultant.

John has served on the Town Planning Commission for over twenty years, with only a one year hiatus in all that time. When he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Town Council in around 2001, he was a natural to serve as the Council representative on the Planning Commission. John has served multiple terms on the Town Council.

About serving on both Town Council and the Planning Commission, John says: "I really enjoy working in Town government. I care very much about looking out for the Town's best interests, and strive to keep it moving in a positive direction, and most importantly, at a manageable rate."

Eric Johnson has been serving on the Town Council since April 2003.

Eric has been a resident of Ridgway since 1997. He is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner currently practicing at the Telluride Medical Center. He received a B.S. in Nursing in 1991 from Idaho State University and a Masters in Nursing from the University of Utah in 1995.

About serving on the Town Council Eric says "I value the sense of community in Ridgway and see my service on Town Council as a way to preserve and enhance Ridgway's environment, culture and businesses."

Eric is married to Kaye Middleton; they have two dogs. He is a "sometimes" writer who enjoys cooking, gardening, skiing and most outdoor activities.


Councilor Paul Hebert. (970) 626-5612.

Paul Hebert has been serving on the Town Council since September 2004. Paul previously served on the Town Council prior to 2004.Paul has lived in Ridgway since 1979.

He and his wife Shawn Mckearnan have two teenage sons Ian and Tyler. For 20 years Paul ran Ascension Enterprises, a business he started at his kitchen table. Ascension manufactured climbing skins and other backcountry skiing related products. He sold Ascension in 2000 and his since been semi-retired, dividing his time between living in Ridgway and traveling with his family on their sailboat. "Traveling has really opened my eyes to the great things we have in Ridgway, as well as the things we can learn from other communities and cultures."

Paul has volunteered twice to fill vacancies on the Town Council and in 2005 was elected to a two-year term. "I really enjoy being on the Town Council. Working with the exceptional staff and fellow council members has been a great experience."


Councilor Debra Hynes. (970) 626-4418.

Debra Hynes is a native Coloradan, who was elected to Town Council in April 2008. She has a bachelor's degree in accounting and was employed with the Town of Ridgway as the Deputy Clerk before deciding to run for Town Council. She is currently employed at several Ridgway businesses and has also been a yoga instructor for many years.

About serving on Town Council Debra says: "I really enjoy serving on Council, this community and it's surroundings are very special. I want to do everything I can to ensure that it stays that way".

Debra has a dog and two cats and spends her free time hiking, biking, skiing and gardening.


Councilor Rick Weaver. (970) 729-1720.

Rick Weaver and his family transplanted from California to Ridgway in 2005 after his noteworthy career as a television producer.   In Colorado, he became a Realtor and currently works out of San Juan Realty.  Rick is also the developer of Ridgway’s new RiverSage Subdivision and the adjacent Dennis Weaver Memorial Park.  His wife Judith is a cosmetologist and the owner of the popular Daymaker’s Salon.  His sons Travis and Jess are students at Ridgway High School.  Rick was elected to Town Council in April of 2008.

 

Councilor Ellen Hunter.

Ellen was first elected to the Town Council in April 2008. Her biography will be forthcoming.
